This visa is to be used for persons that are highly skilled in their occupation. Candidates must be outside Australia to apply.
The occupation does not need to be on a Skilled Occupation List and the maximum period of the visa is up to 6 months. The person’s family may join them on this visa however they will not have work or study ability.

The timeframe will differ from country to country. 400 visas are processed in centralised offshore processing centres, in different regions. Circumstances of the region will influence processing times. Generally, processing times are 2 to 6 weeks.
This visa does not require that the occupation is on the Skilled Occupation List. This means that everyone from Drillers to Engineers and beyond can utilise this visa.
Visa holders will have 3 months, in usual circumstances or up to 6 months, where a strong business case is proven, to live and work in Australia. This period commences from the day the visa holder enters Australia and does not pause when they depart and re-enter.
A strong business case is made out the supporting business can provide evidence that efforts to fill the Australian labour market have failed, or the role is so specialised that there are limited persons in the world that could undertake it.
