Tips on creating a labour strategy for your business

From our perspective, the labour strategy for your business should consider diversity in your workforce and innovation in your hiring techniques. This is what we strive to do at Passage Co. To start doing things the way we do every day this article provides a few tips to get your started…

1. Forecast and figure out what you need

This can be an additional forecast to the financial forecast that most businesses have. A resource forecast allows you to map out the number of resources that you will need to support ongoing contracts or to be flexible enough to win new work.

2. Identify the types of roles that you will need

This will assist you to build out a resource plan. Take a step back and map out exactly the type of person, skill set and experience will be required to fulfill ongoing contracts or to otherwise meet your business goals. It may also help to identify teams of people that would be suited to undertake certain types of work aligned to a project need or specific piece of work.

3. Determine what you’ve got in the business

After building your resource map and calculating the number and type of resources required, you can then start to identify what skills, experience and resources are already in the business. Is it possible to upskill or cross skill talent that already knows your business? Or are some of your staff ready to be promoted to the next level?

4. Identify the gap

Once you know what is in the business, you can identify the skills gaps that are not available. This sets up your recruitment strategy. As Australia’s labour market tightens, in the recovery period of COVID-19, the resources that you need may not be available in the Australian labour market – of course it would be great if you could find them here!

5. Consider innovation hiring strategies

If you can source all the humas that you need in Australia, it is time to start thinking outside of the box. Is there a country that has a strong skill set that you know of, which you can source offshore talent to fill a skills gap. Or are some of the roles low skilled that you need to fill – and could these be filled by students in your industry. A bit of food for thought! At Passage Co, we specialise in creating innovative labour strategies to support Australian businesses do what they do, better.
