Tips for finding a job in Australia

Hey there, are you interested in coming to Australia? Of course, you are – it is great here. This article will provide you with some practical tips on finding a job in Australia with a reputable employer.

1. Facebook is not always right.

While joining Facebook groups and asking the opinions of people about how to migrate to Australia is all research, everyone’s situation is different. So, it is best to take what you hear or read on Facebook to be the 100% deciding factor on one of the biggest decisions in your life. Instead, you may speak to an immigration lawyer, an international recruiter or Australian based companies that would be open sponsoring you.

2. Understand the skilled occupation lists.

In Australia to obtain a skilled worker visa, you need to have an occupation that falls on one of the three Skilled Occupation Lists. The occupation lists will determine the types of visas that you can get, how long you can stay in Australia and if you can move toward permanent residency.

This is important, because when you are planning your big move, its helpful to know how long you will realistically be in Australia for.

3. Working or studying?

Get clear on your goals for when you are coming to Australia. Whether you are coming to study or coming to work will dictate the type of visa that you apply for. There are Student Visas for study, Working and Holiday Visas for travel and work, and Work Visas for work. Depending on what your plans are in Australia – you will apply for whichever suits your circumstances best.

For a sponsored work visa (Subclass 482, Temporary Skills Shortage visa) you would need a minimum of two years of work experience. If you are willing to live and work regional, you may be eligible for a Subclass 494 (Regional Sponsored) visa.

If you are lucky enough to have access to the Working Holiday arrangements, you will be able to apply for either Subclass 417 or Subclass 462 – dependent on your passport country. And note for these that there are certain country requirements for some countries.

Or, if you are simply coming to Australia to be part of our amazing education system – Subclass 500 visa is the one for you. You must be enrolled to study in a course in Australia, be a genuine temporary entrant and be able to afford your school fees, a return ticket and living costs in Australia.

4. Just apply, what’s the worst that can happen?

If you have decided to come to Australia for work, we would recommend checking out Australia’s job boards and just applying for the job that think that you will love. The worst that can happen is that they will not respond or say no, the best that can happen is that they will say yes and sponsor your application – that would be a win!

Some Australian job boards are:
